These are the basics:
My name is Stephan. I’m 22 years old and I live in Stockholm, Sweden. Throughout my childhood I kept hearing about this bike trip my dad and his brother had done when they were young. They had cycled from their home in Frederick, Maryland all the way to the west coast. It sounded amazing to me, but not until I actually flew across the US did I understand what a feat it actually was. It was around that time that the thought occurred to me that I should perhaps make this voyage a family tradition. That was about three years ago, and here I am now actually realizing this dream.
When my dad and his brother did this trip they were 16 and 12 years old (I’m not lying). I’m 22. They did it mostly on two speed steel bikes weighing in at 60 (I’m guessing) pounds. I’m on a 30 speed aluminum touring specific bike with a weight of maybe 30 pounds. They had very little biking experience. I have lots. They did it in six weeks – I’m planning on eight. The only reason I think I can do this is that they did it on worse equipment, with less experience, at a younger age and faster than I’m planning on doing it.
My journey starts from the same house in Frederick as they started. I start on June 26th (the same day they started) and I’m hoping to be in San Francisco by the time my flight leaves on the 23rd of august.
My route – change of plan! I’m not following the Transamerica Bike route up to Oregon, but instead taking something called the western express from Pueblo, Colorado straight to San Francisco.
If you happen to know someone along my route who’d be willing to offer me a roof under which to sleep for a night, a spot on a lawn to pitch my tent, a meal, a pat on the back, a hug, some words of encouragement, some words of warning or a good conversation then hit me up at the e-mail address below.
